Day One:

Day one of my going dark on social media is ultimately a failure. I am moving in the right direction, however, I still had to complete a few sales before completely giving it up. I used my paintball team page on Facebook to post a paintball marker for sale. I also used marketplace to look up a couple of things. This is going to be the most difficult part of this journey I do believe. Marketplace is an excellent tool for buying and selling and I imagine it’s going to cost me some money in the long run giving it up. At least I won’t be ghosted by losers claiming they want to buy stuff anymore.

I was, however, good about Facebook usage. I only used a browser, not the app, and I was just checking the listing I had in a group. I did find myself starting to scroll, but I was able to catch myself and stop. My items did not sell. For a long time I’ve had a habit of selling my stuff in order to buy new, so while this is going to be a rough change, I am just going to have to kick it old school and pay the fees of eBay or deal with the remnants of Craigslist… Or just keep it. I’m not hurting for money, I’ll just keep an eye on my frivolous spending, if the selling aspect of BST isn’t going to be as simple.

I only caught myself typing in “F” and waiting for the “Facebook” URL to pop up in the address bar once on my phone today. Since I was deactivated, it didn’t much matter. By the end of the night, right now, feeling as though it wasn’t the success I had necessarily envisioned, I reactivated my person account… I scrolled for about 30 seconds… And I decided to permanently delete it– not just deactivate. A decade plus of memories and witty status’ all set to disappear forever in 30 days. Here’s to the first day of the rest of my life… Hopefully.

Instagram is still activated, but as mentioned in my previous post, without the app, it’s pretty worthless to try and check it in a browser. I will be logging into it right now simply to update the URL to this blog. I imagine I will also check any notifications and messages, but quickly move on and get out of there.

I wouldn’t necessarily call Day One a success, but certainly a step in the right direction.

I know this blog likely won’t be read by many people. I know many people don’t see constant usage of social media as a problem or maybe they don’t constantly use it, but whatever your level of denial is, I hope these posts help inspire people to go back to a life before the Facebooks and TikToks. There’s a whole world out there to be experienced without thinking about sharing your every move… Or, at least, there was once upon a time.

Edit: As mentioned, I logged into Instagram to upgrade the link in my bio. Just to further prove how difficult they make it for us to free ourselves, I couldn’t edit the URL in my bio without redownloading the app.

The app was redownloaded, link updated to http://www.lifesatrap.com and then deleted again. Welcome to the new website. 😉
