Technically, it’s day two, but yesterday felt like it didn’t count since I had some previously unfinished business on the apps. I’ve taken the last bit of sales stuff off of Facebook and gone the eBay route.
I haven’t really even had the urge to check Facebook or Instagram. I knew the odds that those two social media sites were the sole addiction was pretty small and it would appear that was correct. The phone as a whole is proving to be a big part of it.
I’ve swapped out Insta and Facebook for forums and dating apps. Apparently, I just like keeping my thumbs busy. I do still have reddit too, but I don’t generally use that for scrolling. I caught myself briefly, but quickly realized nothing was catching my attention and therefore, no time sink.
So, what have I learned on day two? That I need to find additional angles to keep myself away from the phone. So far, I’ve been doing small things like going to the bathroom without my phone. It’s amazing how quickly one can get in and out of the bathroom without distraction. I’ve also just been keeping it in a different room, so when I’m in the middle of something, cleaning my car, for example, I’m not grabbing it to briefly refresh anything. I did still take a few breaks throughout the day in which I sat down and scrolled the above mentioned forums and dating apps. Still mindless, still a time sink, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, and not having my phone on my person constantly saves me a ton of those two minute breaks throughout. It adds up.
My only other thought for right now is that I have been looking at my wrist to check my Smart Watch regularly, which, I haven’t had on in a few days. I may go back to wearing it later this week, but just turning off notifications from my phone.
All in all, this wasn’t an exciting post with a ton of breakthroughs, but I’m picking up on a few things here and there, that I hope will continue to give me some clarity. Also, I’m dealing with a foot issue that’s preventing me from doing a lot of the activities I would normally do during the morning of a work day.. so, it’s hard to get much of a reading on if anything has changed since deleting my stuff as I am not in my normal routine.
My final thoughts for day two without social media is that it hasn’t had much negative impact, but I am slowly remember there are friends I have that I only ever talk to on Messenger and now I’m trying to find their E-mails and phone numbers to stay in touch.
That’s all for today, let’s see if tomorrow goes any differently.
